Voulisma Beach: A Guide to the Most Exotic “Golden Sand” Beach in Lasithi

If there’s one beach in Crete that might make you wonder whether you’re still in Greece or have somehow been magically transported to the Caribbean, it’s Voulisma Beach. Also known as “Golden Sand,” Voulisma is located in the beautiful Mirabello Bay, just 12 kilometers east of Agios Nikolaos, in the village of Istron.

It is the beach that “stars” in most of the postcards from the district of Lasithi, and rightly so. Its crystal-clear, turquoise waters, combined with the snow-white sand, create a breathtaking scene from the very first moment you catch sight of it from above as you drive down the main road.

What makes Voulisma stand out from any other beach in the area is the color of its waters. Due to the very fine, light-colored sand on the seabed, the sunlight reflects in such a way that the water takes on a vivid, exotic turquoise hue.

The water is relatively shallow, making it ideal for families with young children. In addition, the beach consistently receives the Blue Flag award, confirming the cleanliness of its waters and the quality of its facilities.

Organization and Amenities

Voulisma Beach is fully equipped, offering all the amenities a visitor needs to spend the whole day there:

Umbrellas and Sunbeds: There are plenty available, but due to the beach’s popularity, they fill up very quickly in the summer.

Beach Bar: Right above the beach, at street level, there is a snack bar/café offering coffee, cold drinks, snacks, and light meals, which you can take with you to the sand.

Access: Access is via a stone staircase that starts from the parking lot. The walk is short and offers the best panoramic views for photos.

When to visit: The importance of the weather

Despite its beauty, Voulisma Beach has a “secret” that every savvy CreteXplorer traveler should know. Due to its orientation, the beach is exposed to the north winds (the famous Aegean meltemi winds).

When a strong north wind blows, the sea gets choppy and often washes seaweed or debris onto the shore, temporarily losing its exotic color. Our tip: Before you go, check the weather forecast. If the winds are from the south or there is no wind, Voulisma will be at its best, resembling a huge natural swimming pool.

Exploring the surrounding area: Istron and Kalo Chorio

A visit to Voulisma can easily be combined with a stroll through the surrounding villages. Istron and Kalo Chorio offer excellent options for traditional Cretan cuisine at taverns that use local ingredients.

If you’re in the mood for more exploring, the archaeological site of Gournia is very close by. It is one of the most important Minoan cities in Crete and is often referred to as the “Pompeii of Minoan Crete” due to its exceptional state of preservation.
