Richtis Gorge: Hiking Guide, Waterfall & Tips

If you’re looking for a hiking experience that goes beyond the typical, arid Cretan landscape, the Richtis Gorge is the ideal destination. Located in the prefecture of Lasithi, on the eastern side of the island, this enchanting gorge looks like something out of a fairy tale. The lush vegetation, the running waters that flow almost year-round, and its impressive waterfall create a setting that resembles a tropical jungle more than a Mediterranean landscape. The gorge is a protected area and part of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Sitia, a fact that confirms its unique natural and geological value.

Where is it located, and how do you get there?

The Richtis Gorge is located on the northern coast of Crete, right between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. The most popular starting point for the hike is the picturesque village of Exo Mouliana, which is about 25 kilometers from Sitia.

When you arrive in Exo Mouliana, you’ll find parking near the main road. From there, signs will guide you to the entrance of the gorge. Alternatively, if you want to save yourself about a half-hour walk on the paved road, you can carefully drive down the narrow, downhill road (if your vehicle allows it) to the starting point at the historic Lachanas Bridge, where there is limited parking.

The Hiking Trail and Main Attractions

Hiking through the Richtis Gorge is a journey full of contrasts, scents, and history. Some of the main highlights you’ll encounter are as follows:

The Historic Lahanas Bridge and the Watermills: The actual entrance to the gorge begins at the stone arched Lahanas Bridge, an impressive 19th-century structure (built around 1907) that once facilitated the movement of local residents. As you proceed, you will see the remains of old watermills, evidence that in the past the region’s abundant water was intensively utilized by the locals for their agricultural activities.

The Rich Flora and Fauna: The trail winds through the shade of centuries-old plane trees, walnut trees, and oleanders. The air is fragrant with the aromatic herbs of the Cretan countryside, such as sage, oregano, and thyme. Ivy winds around the tree trunks, while the murmur of the river, which springs from the peak of Drymia on Mount Ornos, accompanies you throughout the entire journey.

The Impressive Richtis Waterfall: About halfway along the trail, you’ll reach the gorge’s absolute highlight: the impressive waterfall, which is about 15–20 meters high. The water plunges down with force, forming a beautiful, natural pool at its base. There, a resting area with wooden benches has been set up. If you visit the gorge during the summer months, a dip in the icy, refreshing waters of the waterfall is an experience you shouldn’t miss (don’t forget your swimsuit!).

What to Bring (Essential Gear)

Proper preparation is key to safely enjoying the gorge. Be sure to bring the following items with you:

1. Appropriate Footwear: Sneakers or hiking boots. The trail has rocks, tree roots, and sections where you may need to step on wet rocks. Flip-flops are strictly prohibited.

2. Water and Snacks: Make sure to bring plenty of water (at least 1.5–2 liters per person), as there are no drinking water sources along the route. Also, bring light snacks for energy.

3. Swimming Gear: A swimsuit, a small towel, and water shoes if you plan to swim at the waterfall or the beach.

4. Sun Protection: A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Note: If you plan to swim at the base of the waterfall, please do not apply sunscreen immediately beforehand to protect the sensitive wildlife in the pool.

5. Backpack: A convenient backpack to keep your hands free during the hike.

Best Time to Visit and Useful Tips

Although the gorge is accessible year-round, the ideal time to visit is in the spring (April–May) or early summer. During this time, nature is in full bloom, the landscape is lush green, and the river is full of water, offering its maximum beauty. Fall (September–October) is also an excellent choice, with milder temperatures.

The biggest “problem” visitors face is the return trip, since if you’ve left your car at the start of the trail, you’ll have to walk back along a route that’s mostly uphill, which can be tiring after hours of hiking. A good tip (if you’re traveling with two cars) is to leave one vehicle at Richtis Beach and the other at Exo Mouliana. Alternatively, if you prefer the easy option, you can park directly at Richtis Beach (note: dirt road) and walk back, about 30 minutes, until you reach the waterfall.
