Balos Beach attracts thousands of visitors every day, especially in July and August. Boats from Kissamos bring organized groups, causing the beach to fill up quickly. If you prefer a more peaceful experience, try to arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The beauty of the landscape remains unique, but the crowds can detract from the sense of seclusion.
The descent and the return trip are tiring. From the parking lot to Balos Beach, it takes about a 20-minute walk down a downhill path. The return trip takes about 30–35 minutes and is uphill, which can be tiring, especially in high temperatures. Alternatively, you can take a small boat from the port of Kissamos, which offers a more comfortable journey and often includes a stop at Gramvousa Island.
How to get there & useful information
Balos Beach is located northwest of Chania, about 56 km from the city. You can get there either by car via Kissamos or by boat from the port of Kissamos. Since this is a Natura 2000 protected area, free camping, collecting sand or shells, and any alteration of the natural environment are prohibited. It is advisable to bring water, a hat, and sunscreen, as shaded areas are limited. Access is permitted until sunset, and it is recommended that you avoid the midday hours due to the heat.
