2. Elafonisi (Chania): The miracle of the pink sand
Another gem of the Chania region, Elafonisi is located on the southwestern tip of Crete and is a protected area within the Natura 2000 network. What makes Elafonisi famous around the world is its stunning pink sand, which gets its color from millions of tiny, broken shells that wash up on the shore. In fact, Elafonisi is a small islet just a few meters from the shore, and you can reach it by walking through the shallow, crystal-clear waters. Despite the huge crowds during the summer months, the vast expanse of the beach ensures that you’ll always find a spot to enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
3. Falasarna (Chania): Endless sandy beach and magical sunsets
If you’re looking for the ultimate sense of freedom and simplicity, Falasarna is the beach for you. It’s located on the island’s west coast and essentially consists of five consecutive beaches, the largest and most famous of which is Pachia Ammos. The waters here are crystal-clear and get deep more quickly than at Balos or Elafonisi. Because it’s open to the sea, you’re likely to encounter waves when a westerly wind blows, making it a favorite among windsurfers. Furthermore, Falasarna is objectively renowned for having the best sunset in Crete, as the sun literally dips into the waters on the horizon.
4. Preveli (Rethymno): Where the river meets the sea
Leaving Chania and entering the prefecture of Rethymno, we come to Preveli Beach (or Lake Preveli), a landscape of unparalleled and untamed natural beauty. It is located at the exit of the impressive Kourtaliotiko Gorge, where the Megalos River flows into the Libyan Sea. What makes it unique in the world is the dense Theophrastus palm forest that grows along the riverbanks. You can swim in the salty waters of the sea and then take a few steps to dive into the icy, fresh waters of the river under the shade of the palm trees. The descent from the mountain requires walking down quite a few steps, but the experience is simply unforgettable.
5. Matala (Heraklion): The legend of the hippies and the carved caves
Rounding out the top five, Matala in southern Heraklion rightfully claims its place, both for its geomorphology and its rich history. Matala Bay is surrounded by impressive sandstone cliffs, within which artificial caves have been carved. In the 1960s and 1970s, these caves were home to the “flower children” community, making the area a global symbol of freedom. Today, the beach offers thick, dark sand, crystal-clear deep waters, and a unique, bohemian atmosphere. A dip while gazing at the historic rocks is an experience that connects the enchanting natural landscape with the island’s cultural heritage.
