Kourtaliotiko Gorge: 2 Unique Routes for a Long Hike – Pure Enjoyment

The Kourtaliotiko Gorge in southern Rethymno is one of Crete’s most impressive natural destinations. With vertical cliffs reaching heights of 600 meters, springs with crystal-clear waters, and rugged landscapes, it offers a hiking experience that combines adventure and natural beauty. The gorge leads to Preveli Beach and is an ideal choice for those who love nature, exploration, and breathtaking views.

The History of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge.

The name of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge comes from the distinctive sound created by strong winds as they pass through the narrow passages between the rocks. This sound resembles “clapping,” that is, the sound of hands clapping or a clattering noise, and is particularly intense on windy days. The gorge has long served as a natural passage connecting northern and southern Rethymno.

In ancient times and during the Byzantine era, the area was of strategic importance due to its geographical location. On the slopes of the gorge stands the Holy Church of Saint Nicholas Kourtaliotis, a small chapel built into the rock, associated with local legends and traditions. The gorge is now a protected natural area and an important ecosystem for Crete.

The Choices You Have When You Get There.

The “Classic” Trail – Steps & Waterfalls: The most popular option in the Kourtaliotiko Gorge is the short trail that leads to the springs and small waterfalls. Following the steps that descend from the road, you reach a lush green spot with flowing water and natural pools. It’s the perfect choice for those who want to enjoy the gorge’s beauty without a long hike. The trail is relatively easy, but requires caution, especially in wet areas.

The Full Crossing – River Trekking to Preveli: Crossing the entire gorge is a more challenging experience. You start at the springs and follow the riverbed southward, with Preveli Beach as your final destination. The duration is approximately 4 hours, and the difficulty ranges from moderate to difficult. You’ll need to walk through the water over slippery rocks, and in some spots you may even have to swim. Officially, the full crossing is not permitted due to past accidents and hazards; however, some experienced hikers still attempt it at their own risk.

Information & Prices.

Starting in 2025, an entrance fee has been introduced for the Kourtaliotiko Gorge trail, with the aim of protecting the natural environment. The price is €5, €3 for students, while admission is free for children under 18 and for people over 65. Payment is accepted only by card at the entrance, unless you book your ticket online. Hours of operation are typically from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. during the period from May to October. In cases of very strong winds or dangerous weather conditions, access may be temporarily suspended for safety reasons. It is advisable to check the conditions before your visit.

What to Bring – Essentials

If you visit the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, having the right gear makes all the difference. Water shoes or hiking boots are a must, especially if you plan to go in the water, as the rocks are very slippery. If you choose the long crossing, a dry bag will protect your phone, keys, and personal items. Bring plenty of water and snacks, as there are no facilities inside the gorge. A hat and sunglasses are essential, especially during the summer months. Tip: If you choose the long route through the river, opt for an organized group or an experienced guide, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area.

The Kourtaliotiko Gorge is one of the top hiking experiences in Crete, combining wild nature, water, and unique landscapes. Whether you choose the short route to the waterfalls or the long descent to the south, the experience will be well worth it. If you want to reach Preveli Beach without crossing the entire gorge, you can go by car or by boat. Click here for more information.
